BIOMATERIALS DAYS

Grant Winners 2011

Biomaterials Day 2011 Duke University: October 2011
North Carolina Biotechnology Center, Research Triangle Park, NC
For this Biomaterials Day, we plan to highlight the importance of the collaboration between clinicians, industry representatives and researchers in biomaterials design. The theme of this meeting will be "From Bench Top to Bedside – Linking the Biomaterials Triangle: Academia, Industry, and Medicine".

Syracuse University and the University of Rochester "Interactive Biomaterials": Mid-October, 2011
Syracuse University
The goal of the one day symposium will be to highlight undergraduate and graduate research in the Upstate New York region focused on the development of Interactive Biomaterials that are not only biocompatible, but that also actively elicit desired responses when interfaced with biological tissues.

Clemson University Biomaterials Day: "Biomaterials Research Roadmap Back to the Future": October 1, 2011
Madren Conference Center, Clemson, SC
The Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University proposes to host a Biomaterials Day with a focus on "Biomaterials Research Roadmap Back to the Future" on October 1, 2011. This Biomaterials Day will serve as the final symposium for a summer REU program "Biomaterials Research for Regenerative Medicine (director: Jiro Nagatomi, NSF support pending) and feature research by students from Clemson University and other universities. The highlight for this event will be the panel discussions on "Biomaterials Research, Past, Present, and Future" with the past SFB presidents and former department chairs of Clemson Bioengineering (e.g., Samuel Hulbert, Jonathan Black, Andreas von Recum), recent SFB presidents and Clemson Awards winners (e.g., Karen Burg, Martine LaBerge, Kristi Anseth), and undergraduate and graduate student researchers. The goal of the meeting is to stimulate the students' interests in pursuing careers in the field of biomaterials by introducing undergraduate and graduate students to biomaterials scientists from the past and present.

Purdue University, Case Western Reserve University, and University of Kentucky Biomaterials Day 2011: October 29, 2011
Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN
The goal of this meeting is to highlight cutting edge research in the Midwest region and the work done by students at various institutions in the area including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin in the field of biomaterials. It will be co-organized by Society for Biomaterials members at Purdue University, Case Western Reserve University, and University of Kentucky.

Biomaterials Day 2011 at Texas A&M University: May 23-24, 2011
The aim of the Texas A&M Biomaterials Day was to enhance networking between academic, industrial, and clinical sectors and increase student exposure to exciting biomaterials research. The program included a keynote lecture (Jennifer West, Rice University) and two invited talks by a top biomaterial scientist and a clinician (Rena Bizios, University of Texas San Antonio and Robert Probe, Scott and White).

2011 Upper Midwest Biomaterials Day (UMBD): May 12-13, 2011
The Upper Midwest Biomaterials Day featured keynote speakers Dr. David Mooney from Harvard University and Dr. Anthony Atala from Wake Forest University, and featured oral and poster presentations from both local and regional biomaterials researchers on the following topics: Cell-Biomaterial Interactions, Design of Biomaterials, Biomaterials for Drug Delivery Applications, and Biomaterials in Industry.
