is a professional society which promotes advances in all phases of materials research and development by encouragement of cooperative educational programs, clinical applications, and professional standards in the biomaterials field.

Strategic Plan
Focus: K-12 Outreach Task Force
K-12 Outreach Task Force Who's Who

Increase awareness of biomaterials in K-12 Have student chapters (and others)present lectures in K-12 classes, most likely during Science Day 2000 Committee members, Student chapters
Determine whether it would be possible to get a section on biomaterials in the Odyssey of the Mind, and/or Science Olympiad.  2000 Committee members
Determine how to encourage Science Fair projects in the area of biomaterials. 2000 Committee members
Evaluate feasibility of producing a teaching module on biomaterials for science teachers. 2000/ 2001 Committee members
Provide educational experiences in biomaterials for K-12 students  Review previous goals and activities in this area to determine which are feasible. This includes the following:
  • Workshops/Short Courses in biomaterials/ bioengineering for teacher organizations
  • A course on Introduction to Biomaterials/ Bioengineering for presentation at annual science teacher meetings
  • 5-Day summer camp proposal for 8-12 (proposed to be sent to funding agencies)
2000 Committee members
Help inform high school students of opportunities in biomedical engineering and biomaterials Establish e-mail mentor programs for high school students with SFB members, with emphasis on student chapter participation - similar to the one in Newark, CA with Silicon Valley participants. 2000 Committee members, Student chapters
Evaluate how to help promote the establishment of additional high school student intern programs at research institutions & companies - such as the one in place at the Cleveland Clinic. 2000/ 2001 Committee members
