The coatings perform the most important function of making the environment for the device cell friendly and vice versa.
The drug eluting stent is one such example. Although the metal is nitinol and it is biocompatible, the in-vivo environment of the patient could not be very conducive for the stent. In order for the stent to function more efficiently and reduce any complications arising due to such factors, the surface is coated with a chemical such as SIBS/paclitaxel. This coating is non-thrombogenic and reduces the probability of thrombosis in the period immediately after the stent deployment.
